[ Sasuke's gotten so used to training people who are a bit more... open ended when it comes to a time frame, that he's actually surprised to hear the sound of someone entering the dojo right around the same that he was supposed to be there. He's never been late for anything himself and so there's an appreciation for having the agreement actually adhered to.
He had been in the middle of his own meditations when Robby respectfully announced his own presence and he opens his eyes to look at him as he comes into the dojo. He gives him a nod before he pulls himself up off the floor, the empty left sleeve of his black tunic dangling awkwardly by his side when he goes to give him a bow in greeting. One day he'd be smart and ask Sansa to alter off the extra fabric, but today is not that day. ]
It's good to meet you in person.
[ He goes to walk over to his bag in the corner, digging into it and pulling out a small bunch of papers. He goes to hand them to him, most of which are covered in things that almost look like they belong in an anatomy book. ]
These are for you. They show the chakra maps in the body and where each gate for the elements are located. It's a boring read, but it will help when things get more detailed.
[ Robby recognises first that this guy can't be much older than him. What does he think about that? Nothing that stops him from entering the dojo, feet bare on its flooring (and what he thinks, he already figures he doesn't care; it's the lesson that does). He stops, and sees the bow before he does anything curious, and reacts to join with it: arms firm at his sides, back kept straight, but his face keeps forward, a little unused to see a head be fully bowed, too.
(But that is when he sees the odd way the sleeve dangles; thinks it's a fashion thing at first, but then realises the other possibility.
He won't keep staring, and he's not going to ask.) ]
Thanks for meeting me, [ he gives the welcome, and stays where he is when Sasuke walks. He's watching him as he comes back, but also what he's holding. He's curious, and his eyes don't hide it, even as the sheets come better into view and what can be seen can be described as: a lot.
Robby takes them, turning to look at the reference, each line and point and marking. It reminds him of nerve system posters, which they might as well be. His eyes narrow, brow slightly furrows, but it's concentration before exasperation.
He looks at Sasuke, nodding to the sheets. ] Did you have to learn how to open each gate?
No. [ It comes out quick and a little firmer than he intended, given that it was a perfectly reasonable question. He's learned that the usual chakra, or energy like chakra, people have heard about seems to be very much about opening gates. ] The gates help you to control chakra, they help to move it through the body, and restrict access to its full power so you don't wear yourself out.
[ He points to the names scribbled down at the gates, which at least are different than the typical elements, even if they're colored the same. Things like Initial Gate and Life Gate.]
Each gate is associated with an element, but you don't have to open them to use it in a nature transformation. It's more that that's simply the gate that influences your chakra the most. Actually opening them requires more strength than most shinobi possess. I've never attempted it and my sensei could only open the first. It can give you incredible strength, but the toll on the body is usually too much for the human body. Opening all eight gates has killed nearly everyone who has tried.
[ There's a pause before he notes: ] It all sounds less confusing once you learn more about the pathways. And less dangerous.
[ Robby digests the information, or tries to, reworks how to look at this and his idea of gates. Not for opening, but for controlling; and there's lines presented like a nervous system connected to them and around the body. If it's a gate, Robby thinks, then it's more like a dam. A reservoir that runs through the entire body, with each point having a specific purpose.
He's not sure if the comparison works, but it's easier on his mind for now, so he nods, looks between the papers and Sasuke. ]
Do you want me to read any of this now? [ Or move onto some other part? is the implication of the question. How they move into the lesson is down to the sensei. ]
[ Sasuke shakes his head. Mostly because sitting and watching someone read would probably be boring even for someone as studious as he can be. ]
I want to see how much chakra you might already possess naturally.
[ A good deal of chakra was built up through physical exercise and practicing hand-to-hand combat, which he's found a great deal of people here already did a lot of. It had made for a good base to start off of. ]
You said you did that... Karate thing? Are you able to demonstrate some of it for me?
[ He could watch how it built up as he move if he did. ]
[ Well, this is more fun an option than being made to sit and read. Robby nods at the request, holds the papers back for Sasuke to take temporarily (or he can set them on the floor, whichever), and then walks to take a place that gives him room. He takes a second or two with a bowed head, eyes closed, deciding on what to do; before he straightens his body with his hands curling into fists at his sides, feet twisting into place. He bows to the room, and already: he's focusing. An awareness on his surroundings, but one on himself. The breath he takes aiding in that, even how he holds his body.
He starts off what may seem slow, his fists raising before him in a circular motion, the back of them facing outward. An elbow drawn back, a fist swung from side to side sharply, swift; a foot sweeping forward yet carefully to bring him forward, switching hands for the punch, his strength not weakening between the two.
And then he continues, with movements that to some, may seem not to have any meaning than as appealing; but there's a purpose to even the way he moves his hips, how he holds his fingers; where the power in his body is directed, and while the moves may not be what Sasuke is used to, maybe he can understand the way power is distributed. Hips moved accordingly to aid not just in how Robby faces himself, but also helping to stabilise him even in a punch, in how he swings an arm meant for a block.
It's a pretty set of movements, but none are taken half-heartedly; where the only times that his focus dips is simply in the rust of doing a set of movements not as well-practised as he'd like, but Robby manages to bring himself back into it, reaching the end of the set.
[ Sasuke watches with interest, being sure to focus in with his Rinnegan so that he can see the chakra as it starts to flow in his veins. It's a pale blue at first, exactly as he'd expect in someone untrained, but it's the way it grows as he moves that is of interest to him.
The movements themselves are familiar in a way. Different than taijutsu, but he's seen something like it enough when Rock Lee would train. The shinobi had never had enough chakra to master ninjutsu, but he had more than made up for the power in his hand-to-hand combat skills. He can't help but give a small smile at it, thinking that Lee and his sensei would probably have been highly intrigued by this foreign martial art so many here seemed to know.
He notes the way that he keeps control of his movements, the strength it takes to stay so focused. The glow in his chakra system has become brighter, stronger, taking on its own color rather than the pale blue it was before. He tilts his head, glad to see that there's something raw there, a natural reserve that will be easy to call on with physical movement. ]
You'll learn quickly. [ He goes to offer the papers back to him. ] How often do you train in what you already know?
[ He's approached Sasuke, taking back the papers when they're held back, mouth tugging into a small smile briefly. Pleased, but he won't get ahead of himself about how well he's doing yet. ]
Every day, two or three hours? More with learning new kata and how to use a staff. Most of that's just going through old kata and relearning it; it's calming, taking it slow.
[ Which he admits with a small shrug. ]
My body doesn't like sitting still this month either.
[ Still, he approves of using that much time a day for practice. It shows a dedication that he appreciates in students, one that he always had himself, ever since he was a kid. ]
Don't worry about traditional meditation until your energy has returned to normal. Kata is doing you just fine in building your chakra strength and if you continue to push yourself with learning new things, it will grow that much more. Tell me once you've finished the readings and we can try to work on how to control the flow of it next time.
[ He hadn't been holding onto any breath, but there's still the shot of relief over wait to do traditional meditation. It would be a bitch, he knows, to try like this, and he doesn't even have a problem with the whole sitting down and emptying the mind workout -- finds it relaxing, even. ]
Cool, great -- thanks. [ He holds the papers with a nod, and he thinks to look around but stops before he really starts. ] Uh, I don't know if this matters in a place like Trench, but-- what values do you run your dojo on?
[ Values? Sasuke has to stop and think about that for a moment. He isn't sure he's really thought to establish values. The creeds back home were known by everyone, and every dojo followed them, it was still strange to think of each having their own ideas on these things.
He finally gives an honest gesture: he shrugs. ]
All I ask is for is respect and dedication during every lesson. I teach people in hopes that they will be able to better protect themselves and their loved ones, but what you actually end up doing with the knowledge is on you.
[ No 'No Mercy' bullshit? Yeah, Robby can take that, and he likes the simplicity and honesty of it. Just put in the training -- and he'd already been planning on doing that. ]
I'll be back in a day or two? Unless you think this is gonna take me longer to get through. [ The reading, that is. ]
[ He shakes his head. If it were Johnny, he would say absolutely, but he thinks that Robby's... not... an idiot. Which is a high compliment, really, considering how many people he's very quick to call that. ]
I doubt it will take more than two. The difficult part is applying the knowledge to your own chakra, not learning about it in the first place.
